As a former classroom teacher and school librarian, I am too familiar with the number of life and, unfortunately, death situations that young people face. There were many times when my literature lesson plans were pushed aside to deal with real issues and trauma! Jordin’s Life Lesson: Moving Day follows the emotions of a little girl experiencing the loss of the only home she has ever known. The book’s theme could easily support and soothe children who experience change, death and loss in a variety of situations. School counselors are often summons to handle such cases, but with Jordin’s Life Lesson, all adults are armed with a beautifully illustrated story to help young listeners cope with the inevitable: CHANGE!
I loved it. I’m now going to share it with my 8year old daughter and 5 year old son. It is very well written and the illustrations are beautiful. The colours especially were so appealing. I loved how you added a debrief at the end…it was the icing on the cake.
Book Review: Jordin’s Life Lessons-Moving Day by Jazmar Allison Counselors often tell parents to read a book to a child that will prepare them for a life event. I know my mother did back in the 1980’s when she wanted to broach the topic of her returning to work full time. The story and illustrations helped me and my younger sister to understand how our daily routine would change and what was expected as we faced each day as a family. “Jordan’s Life Lessons-Moving Day” by Jazmar Allison is founded on the same principle that children benefit from a book that prepares them for a new chapter in life. Jordan, the main character has to come to terms with leaving the only home she has ever known. She clings her her dog, Milo for support. Throughout the story, the childhood fears of many children as they pertain to moving are addressed. Friends from the neighborhood stop in to say goodbye. They promise to stay in touch. Old memories of her room, including painting on her walls and enjoying sleep overs are celebrated with the excitement and expectation of new adventures to have in her new room. By the time Jordan and Milo arrive at their new house, the main character falls in love with her new room. Her name is already on the door, a good subtle suggestion for parents as they prepare their own child with a future moving day. Beautifully illustrated and seamlessly presented, it is a book with both a positive message and a simple layout, helping children to understand that their fears about are normal. It takes the scary out of moving day! https://micheleberesford.wordpress.com/2017/02/05/book-review-jordins-life-lessons-moving-day-by-jazmar-allison/
“Jordin’s Life Lessons” is a delightful book about the fear of the unknown and the love of family. The art is bright and beautiful and perfect for children, the message is timeless and well conveyed and the story was super cute. I recommend this book for any family looking to incorporate some fun life lessons in their story time.
Jordan’s life lessons is a wonderful story. Well written and beautifully illustrated. A must have for your child’s book collection.
I finally had the opportunity to read this book. I like that you put a life lesson at the end to sum things up. The illustrations were fantastic! I think this book will help ease stress for young children during a move. I think it could be appropriate for the end of grade 1 all the way up to grade 3 or 4 depending on how fluently a child is reading. It may be possible to contact accelerated reader and Lexile’s to ask them to place the book at a reading level on each of their continuums.
